How a Layoff Kickstarted My Most Liberating Journey

From Corporate Chains to Creative Freedom: My Journey & Your Blueprint

Being laid off is tough.

I was burned out, and I saw it coming from miles away, but not even that minimized the shock of that first day without a job.

But, What Now?

Given the emotional toll and the burnout from my previous job, going back into similar roles didn't seem appealing, I was done with software engineering, I needed a change. I had the option of finding another job or trying to make it on my own. I was burned out, so I chose the latter.

Exploring New Ventures

Boy, did I stumble trying to find what 'my calling' was. From etsy stores, to subscription boxes, to real estate wholesaling, I tried it all, but nothing stuck. I always had hundred good ideas, and each new venture seemed promising, but none provided the fulfillment I craved, I quickly lost the initial rush of dopamine I felt when starting each new venture. I wasted two years trying to do all sorts of side hustles and come up with the next big business idea. This period marked the beginning of a journey filled with joys and sorrows, sleepless nights, and significant victories. However, nothing felt that it was the right fit.

Rediscovery

It took me a few years, but I came full circle and realize that my true strength is in creating (as in bringing something into existence), with a focus on engineering, particularly software engineering. A software project I begun with a couple of ex-coworkers, and working with exceptional engineers on full stack development during a brief stint as interim CTO reignited my creative passion in engineering and showcased my natural inclination towards problem-solving through code. Essentially, I realized that I am a creative who enjoys software engineering. If that speaks to you, and I believe it does because you are reading this, I invite you to embark on your own journey to discover your true potential and find your freedom.

A Blessing in Disguise

I didn't realize it at the time, but being laid off was the best thing that happened to me. The security of a steady paycheck had always held me back from taking the leap into the unknown. I do not think I would have left the corporate world otherwise, as leaving the security and certainty of that monthly check arriving in your bank is not an easy decision.

The experience pushed me outside of my comfort zone, which was terrifying but ultimately rewarding. But, I'm glad I was forced to leave that security because what's on the other side is far more fulfilling, liberating, and soul-enriching. This event opened the door to a path I likely would have not voluntarily chosen, one full of possibilities and opportunities for growth, personal development, and freedom.

Embarking on a New Path

By no means am I suggesting that you jump into the void without any plans for replacing your income or healthcare. However, I am confident that beginning your journey, taking that first step, to leave the 9-5 grind, is the best thing you can do for yourself and your family.

The Transformational Path

More than the outcome, the most valuable thing you will get is the journey itself.

The journey we're about to embark on is truly transformational. It’s not just about changing careers; it’s about transforming your entire life perspective. You will not be the same person as when you started. You will have evolved, you will see things differently, you will be more self-aware of your own potential, and you will undoubtedly be on your way to leaving the grind and achieving the freedom that you deserve. Are you ready to take that first step?
